Sølve Sundsbø has established himself as one of the world’s leading image makers. He has shot some of the most memorable and arresting images of recent years and has garnered respect for his uncompromising vision and otherworldly concepts, which often question viewers’ perceptions of reality and has pushed the evolving fashion language beyond the still image. Sundsbø is celebrated for his versatility, both in his open-mindedness towards new technologies, from 3-D scanning to hand-painted retouching, and in the breadth of his style.
Born in Norway in 1970, he came to London in 1995 to study photography at the London College of Printing. Whilst he still lives in London along with his wife and four children, his native country continues to inspire him, and the influence of clean, natural Norwegian aesthetics can be viewed in many of his pictures.
His commercial collaborations have resulted in iconic images and films created for major fashion and beauty brands, including Bulgari, Cartier, Chanel, Estée Lauder, Giorgio Armani, Gucci, Guerlain, Hermès, Lancôme, Louis Vuitton, Narciso Rodriguez, Prada, Thierry Mugler and Tom Ford.
Sundsbø is passionate about seeing his work in the context of magazines and has shot a variety of pioneering editorials and covers. He contributes regularly to Harper’s Bazaar Italia, i-D, Love, The New York Times Magazine, Numéro, Perfect, Re-Edition, V, Vogue Italia, and W.
In 2011, his NY Times piece “14 Actor’s Acting” won an Emmy Award in the category ‘New Approaches to News & Documentary Programming: Arts, Lifestyle and Culture’ at the 32nd Annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards. In collaboration with W, he created and exhibited an oversized 50 ft tall multi-screen film installation “The Ever Changing Face of Beauty”(2012), a surrealist and ethereal piece that integrates both the natural and technologically vivid elements of Sundsbø’s filmmaking.
He has also created artwork for numerous album covers, most notably for Coldplay’s “A Rush of Blood to the Head”, which was later immortalized as a Royal Mail stamp honoring the most iconic British album sleeve covers.
His work has been exhibited worldwide, in group shows and solo exhibitions such as “Beyond the Still Image” (2018) at Milan’s Palazzo Reale. Sundsbø also received praise for his images of the Alexander McQueen archive shot for the catalogue of the celebrated “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty” retrospective at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (2011).
Today, Sundsbø continues to push the boundaries of image-making, working across a range of platforms from photography to fashion film, while constantly uniting traditional, old-fashioned techniques with pioneering technologies. His artwork has been included in auctions by Phillips De Pury and is held in the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London.
